Art Event # 2

So this past week i went to the wind ensemble concert in Anderson Theater. The concert was titled A Celtic Journey, and it really lived up to its name. The conductor, Curley, was very humerous and he talked a little about the songs before they were played. I liked that, made it more personal. They played a lot of music that was very good, but i was unfamiliar with, and they also played the famous Danny Boy tune which everyone seemed to enjoy. I used to sing this song in chorus when i was younger, so that brough back memories. They also had a bagpiper come in to assist with that well known song. The lighting was very neat when he came in, it was like a ghostly blue surrounding him. My friend Ben does the lighting and i talked with him after, he said it was totally improvisation! I also spoke to my friends who were in the show and it turns out about 1/3 of them were not playing their primary instrument, i thought that showed how much they have truly learned here at Hartwick. They also all commented on how "Curley has been the BEST addition to the music department." I thoroughly enjoyed the show, partially because i knew a lot of the performers, but also because the music and setting was very well done. I took a picture with my phone i will try and get up here if i can.

When the stars go blue

Cover of a great song, more one tree hill but the one the Corrs do is the way i like it sung (acousitc.)

Feel This

This movie is a compilation of a lot of scenes from One Tree Hill, and the song in the back ground is called "Feel This" and it's sung by Bethany Joy who plays Haley on the show. I LOVE the song, but i also love how all the songs are spliced together and come together to make a real feeling. This movie is really powerful for me. Check it out!

Question 4

Well, youtube isnt being much help, so i think i will just "speak my mind." For me, if there wasn't digital media i think i would feel unconnected, similar to the guy in the movie i posted earlier once his friends lose connection. I know when i am upset or not feeling good i can pick up my phone or go online and ppl will be there to talk to. OR on the flip side if something awesome happened i can let everyone know immediatly. So i think for me losing digital media would be a bad thing, although personally i like to get outside and do other things so maybe it would help me find more time for that. For the world and the US economy though i dont know if we would survive it, individually maybe but we rely so heavily on it for stock exchange, news, and i know the government uses it for security and other very important things. I think if the world lost digital media chaos would ensue, and i wonder if maybe that would be a HUGE wake up call, kind of like the Die Hard movie where because everything is linked digitally, everything can be hacked and taken over. Scary but true, and i hope somewhere people are taking precaution that thinks don't become all linked because movies i think put ideas in peoples head, especially bad ones. So though i think there may be a silver lining, for the most part i do not want to lose the media we have now... however do i want up to continue in the direction we are going.. robots and federal ID cards, not really, but that is a discussion for another day.

Question 4

Well i didnt find what i was looking for but this is still pretty neat .. before you could play "tony hawk" or any sport through digitat media you had to ACTUALLY get outside and Do It!!

Question 4

What would happen if the "digital world" dissapeared, well this video shows people who have become a part of the world very literally, and in an interesting way this shows you one scenario. Trying to get some news video on the blackout of the northeast we had a few years ago, that will be up soon i hope. None of these are positive i can say that much, for the third post i might put something up from a LONG time ago, before digital media existed.

Question 3

This video shows how the stock exchange can be accessed online from your own how anywhere in the world! Not too long ago the stock exchange could only be effected be people who were physically there, now digital media is changing all our lives.

Question 3, yearbook

So, to try and keep up with things here, the last question was about how media directly affects my life, a great example was when the other day i became president of the yearbook club on campus, and i learned that ALL the communication and setup of the layout and EVERYTHING is done online now through a program. I remember in my high school yearbook club when we had to cut with an exacto knife and then paste things and if you messed up there was no "undo". my next post i hope to find a good video/pic example of that.

Digital Media in MY life

Well, i have been a bit busy so i need to get back into blogging. Last week's question i WILL get to, sooner or later, but this week the focus is on how digital media affects my life. It's funny that, because i read the question at the begining of the week, although i haven't written about it, i have been on the lookout for when i am using it. Well of course there is the cell phones, computer, tv, all that.. but specifically i had 2 instances when digital media really helped me out.

Number one is for my thesis i am working on a Caldera in the white mountains, you don't have to know what that means, just that because i was working on it i needed data about it. Well i found this great database CCDB i believe, where they are slowly but surely compiling all old and new data on caldera's and liking it to a map. Very cool, and very helpful-- maybe when i finish my thesis my information will go up on this database too!

Number 2 was for the weather, this weekend i have a show i am suppose to go to, kind of like a craft show but for rocks, set up the same way though, with part of it outside. Well i have been keeping an eye out because in 2 weeks i go to Texas, so i need to watch the weather to plan, but also for this weekend because i am supposed to be outside, and i will be doing a lot of driving too. It is so cool that you can just go online and get an idea of what the weather will be a week from now, in a completely separate part of the country. It helps if the weather man is right though, haha.

OK well that's all for now, i will post again soon!

Art Event #1

On Friday night i went to the Autumn Cafe with my friend Eliza. We saw two bands, The Glob Family, and Newspaper Joe. It was The Glob Family's first performance, and the music was very experimental, while Newspaper Joe had actually performed there before and i enjoyed their music thoroughly. I was really interested in the digital media aspect of the show, however, and i was not let down. All throughout the show there was 16mm film being projected up on the wall behind the band. All totally random things, Japanese woman, frogs, cartoons, boy scouts from the older days, etc. There was also a projector facing the outside of the Cafe and projecting up onto the marble wall of the bank across the street, a kind of advertisement for the show. I thought that was very neat. I spoke with some of the people running the reels and they said the reels of film were from BOCES, and that the show was actually created based on the finding of this film. Most of the show was dint using the old projectors, however i think at one point there was some newer digital media going on, as the woman had said the band member converted one of the reels to a CD. One of the things i found fascinating was the impact of the video without sound. At one point the video was an educational video, what looked like something that would be aired on PBS. The theme of this particular video was color, and they showed how to use a prism to break white light and then how to use primary colors to make the secondary colors and so on. Without the narration, however, the whole concept seemed to change, and instead all you hear is the band playing. I thought that was very interesting, and in my head sometimes i could hear a "narration" of my own. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Autumn Cafe, and i feel as if i learned a little more about digital media and media in general. I hope to put up some photos and maybe some video soon, as i had my camera with me and i did take some footage.

What Is Digital Media?

I thought I'd get a jump start on this question, for now I'm just going to brainstorm. To me digital media is:

  • being able to take a picture in Austria via camera/camera phone and have family in the US seeing it within seconds of me taking it
  • watching live news from anywhere in the world, about anywhere in the world
  • and watching it on a computer, ipod, phone, etc... not just tv
  • advertising on the internet
  • manipulating photos and videos and posting them where anyone anywhere can see
  • storing HUGE amounts of media in very small amounts of space, ie thumb drives
  • better quality photography and videography
There's much more to it, but the key concept is quality, anywhere, anyone, anytime. Remember that Dr. Suess book that talked about "the places you'll go" and there is that page about waiting? Well unless your waiting for an operator to help you fix your ipod/camera/phone etc ... you don't have to wait anymore. There are pros and cons to this but most people only see the pros. I kind of like to go on a vacation and have to wait to get back to sit down and show the family the photos, but now with digital they can see them the moment I take them. However crime scenes for example are a huge pro, photos can be taken and sent as soon as the scene of the crime is discovered. News can get live coverage unlike ever before with digital, and anyone can see it. To me .. in one word... digital media is fast. Always updating and very reliable.

Here is one example of live media from hurricane Katrina the man speaking even says "this is good digital video":

First Time

Soo I am new to blogging. Just started a digital arts class and the idea is not only to use photoshop to manipulate art, but also to explore the world of digital art online. Every week there will be a new blog on a new topic. All random, hopefully interesting. Feel free to check it out, I will also be posting all my manipulated art (photos and videos) on here, as well as on flickr and youtube. Guess we will see how this goes! Feel free to comment on anything... especially any tips you might have! Thanks :)
